eTA New Zealand for Hong Kong Citizens

New Zealand Visa Waiver requirements from Hong Kong

Hong Kong citizens travelling with a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport or a British Overseas passport can enter New Zealand for periods of up to 90 days by obtaining the New Zealand eTA. The NZeTA is not a visa but is obligatory for Hong Kong citizens from October 1st, 2019.

Do I Need a Visa Waiver for New Zealand from Hong Kong?

Whether Hongkongers need a visa for New Zealand from Hong Kong depends on the purpose of their visit and the length of their stay.

For trips that are up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes, citizens from Hong Kong can now apply online for the electronic travel authority rather than a traditional visa.

The eTA for New Zealand is a mandatory requirement for citizens of Hong Kong travelling to New Zealand from October 2019, onwards.

Although the NZeTA is usually approved within 1 business day, travellers are advised to complete the online application at least 3 business days before departure, to allow sufficient processing time in case they are required to submit additional documents. Once approved, applicants will receive their electronic travel authorization via email.

The eTA New Zealand for Hong Kong citizens is valid for a total of 2 years and it allows multiple entries of up to 90 consecutive days in New Zealand.

Hong Kong citizens holding an NZeTA still need to meet all the rest of the entry requirements for New Zealand upon arrival such as being a bona fide visitor and holding sufficient funds to cover their expenses during their stay.

For longer visits, or if they want to work or study in New Zealand, Hong Kong nationals need to go to an embassy or consulate of New Zealand to apply for a visa.

There are various different types of New Zealand visas depending on the specific situation the Hong Kong traveller is in, as well as the purpose of their trip to NZ.

NZeTA application for Hong Kongese citizens

To complete the eTA New Zealand application from Hong Kong, travellers need to fill out the eTA New Zealand application form by entering some information including their full name, address, date of birth, passport details, and travel plans. They may also encounter some health and security-related questions.

To minimize the chances of delays or even rejections, applicants need to carefully revise all the information on the form. Unanswered questions and small mistakes, such as typos, can cause the reviewing process to take longer.

eTA Visa Waiver New Zealand requirements for Hong Kongese

The New Zealand eTA requirements must be met by all eligible foreign nationals from visa waiver countries, including Hong Kong.

The basic requirements include having:

  • A valid Hong Kong or British Overseas passport that remains current for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from NZ
  • Paying a service fee and tourist levy (if applicable) using a credit or debit card
  • Completing the NZeTA online application fully and accurately

Once the application has been approved, the eTA is sent to the email address provided by the citizen on the application form.

Applicants who have more than one passport due to dual nationality will need to use the same passport to apply for the NZeTA from Hong Kong and to enter the country. The eTA is only valid when used with the corresponding passport.

For Hong Kong tourists, it’s important to remember that the passport required for a successful application must be an HKSAR or British National–Overseas passport.

Travel to New Zealand From Hong Kong

Travellers are advised to print a copy of their Tourism eTA visa waiver for New Zealand to present to the New Zealand border control to gain entry. Visitors also need to present their passport which must correspond with the New Zealand eTA.

Cruise passengers must present a valid Tourism NZeTA just like those who reach the country by plane. Crew members, on the other hand, can refer to their employer to obtain a dedicated type of travel authorisation.

Hongkongers who plan to transit through Auckland International Airport on their way to a different destination are obliged to apply for a Transit eTA.

After completing the eTA application, the system will determine the type of NZeTA the Hong Kong citizen needs —depending on whether they are staying in New Zealand or transiting through— and calculate the appropriate fees.
